Official Tokyo announced to the Americans its intention to remain in the Russian Sakhalin-2 energy project, related to the production of liquefied natural gas. This happened during the Japanese-American negotiations at the ministerial level., which took place in Washington.
This message came from the Japanese TV channel NHK.
We explained to the American side, that in this matter we plan to maintain the status quo. I think, that they understood our position – told media representatives the head of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Koichi Hagiuda.
The official explains this decision by, that if Japanese companies withdraw from the Sakhalin-2 project, someone else will take their place. And this will lead to additional income for the Russians. And although the Japanese are trying to convince to do otherwise, they don't intend to do it.
Tokyo faces tough choices after, as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the transfer of the project under Russian jurisdiction. Now a company registered in our country becomes its operator.
The Sakhalin-2 project has been operating since 1994 years on the basis of a production sharing agreement. A controlling stake in its shares belongs to the Russian "Gazprom". Rest 50 percent minus one share are distributed among three foreign companies. These are Japanese Mitsubishi and Mitsui, as well as the British-Dutch Shell, whose share is 27,5 percent. used photos:FELL DOWN “Gazprom”
