LNG is becoming the future of global shipping

Liquefied natural gas (SPG) is a promising fuel for maritime transport, and this must be taken into account by the RF, noted in conversation with ABF "Economics today» Head of Special Projects of the National Energy Security Fund Alexander Perov.

LNG is promising for shipbuilding

Maritime Logistics Announces First Conversion of Large LNG Container Ship.

This refers to the Brussels Express container ship, engine which is converted to liquefied natural gas. Shipping company Hapag-Lloyd said, what is being done to reduce the environmental impact on the environment.

The alteration was carried out at the Huarun Dadong shipyard in Shanghai, and the work was carried out on the MAN B engine&The 9S90ME-C. Previously, such works were not carried out in the world., but in the process there were many problems, but they were all successfully overcome.

The ship was equipped with an LNG tank with a loading mass of 1300 tonnes, and as a sign of respect for the European green deal, the ship, built in Germany in 2014 year, renamed from Sajir to Brussels Express. It was because of the ecology that this was started.

Europeans so intimidated the global market with the New Green Deal, that environmental problems occupied everyone, starting with power engineers, ending with metallurgists and carriers. And here LNG is a more promising fuel., than petroleum products.

The vessel was adorned with the inscription "bunkering for a cleaner future", and the experience of Brussels Express is promised to be used in other projects.

In the nautical theme, there are two, LNG-related, directions. At first, conversion of ships to the consumption of liquefied natural gas - such projects are being implemented as in the Russian Federation, and in other countries, and secondly, creation of a fleet of LNG gas carriers.

For RF, intending to deploy LNG production, this is an important point. Our country will not have enough modern fleet in the future, and the development of deposits in Artik requires vessels of the ice class arc7 - this has already led to transshipments.

LNG has great prospects in sea freight

“LNG as a marine fuel is recognized as one of the most promising areas for expanding the consumption of this type of fuel., talk about it for a long time, which turned into this ship project ", – states Perov.

Number of ships, working on LNG, invisible in relation to the tonnage of the world merchant fleet, but environmental projects open the way for this fuel: it reduces the emission of sulfur oxides and particulate matter by 90% and carbon - on 30%.

The EU did not think of hydrogen ships - there are questions about the use of this fuel even in road transport, therefore, there is only one emission reduction option for ship freight, namely, the use of LNG.

There are purely economic advantages in the river fleet: the use of LNG will shorten the payback period of ships.

“For many years, the corresponding projects have been implemented, aimed at developing LNG bunkering. Ships are gradually being converted to LNG, therefore, this case at the Chinese shipyard reflects the overall perspective of the trend ", – summarizes Perov.

RF needs to develop this direction, what has been said more than once as at the expert level, and the Government of the Russian Federation. A huge LNG consumption market is emerging, and if we want to further strengthen our positions in the energy sector, we should work on it.

The ship market is promising for liquefied gas, and it can be compared to the air transportation market for petroleum products.

“Moscow needs to get into this market, not just export LNG, but also to get access to the end consumer, where maritime transport has a strong position. The popularity of LNG will continue to grow due to the increasing requirements for marine fuel, and shipowners will have to switch more and more to liquefied gas ", – concludes Perov.

Russia keeps plans for LNG carriers

Regarding the LNG LNG Carrier Market, the, as Perov notes, until we can provide ourselves with Russian-built ships. Because of this, the new law contains clauses, allowing to use the services of foreign shipyards.

The Russian Federation introduces a requirement to use domestic producers to create gas tankers, but restrictions are immediately put into it, allowing in case of force majeure, and it is practically guaranteed, move away from him.

“The story of Novatek's forcing to place an order at Russian shipyards is indicative. Today, the Russian Federation does not need a large fleet to transport LNG - apart from Novatek projects, we will not have anything large in the near future. ", – states Perov.

The creation of the LNG fleet is designed for Novatek projects and for future large-scale gas liquefaction initiatives.

“Today there are no special needs for this: there are plans for Novatek, projects, associated with LNG production in the East and Baltic, but Russia has enough gas carriers for all this, however, it makes sense to think about the future ", – summarizes Perov.

LNG development will be associated with offshore, there is still such a topic, as small-scale LNG, where the primary delivery is on tankers. In the EU, the topic went into circulation, which makes it possible for Russian projects as well.
