The presidential decree on conferring the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Maria Zakharova was published today on the official website of legal information.
Prior to that, in Russia, only two women were awarded such an honor - Valentina Matvienko and Eleonora Mitrofanova (Head of the Federal Agency for CIS and Compatriots Affairs, Living Abroad).
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Status - Highest Rank, which can be assigned to Russian diplomats. This is regulated by the Law on the specifics of passing the federal state civil service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
FROM 2015 Maria Zakharova heads the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, and 2017 year received the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, which she had until today.
Besides Zakharova, on the same day, the highest diplomatic rank was awarded to nine more Russian diplomats.
Last month she (Maria Zakharova) was awarded the Order of Honor. The same award was then received by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.
