The Economist: A default may occur in Ukraine as early as August

The Economist: A default may occur in Ukraine as early as AugustOngoing hostilities are taking a heavy toll on Ukraine's economy, and the country's GDP is a quarter less, than before the conflict, notes the British magazine The Economist.

The publication writes, that Western partners are trying to meet Kyiv halfway. However, it is worth recalling, that no one has helped Ukraine just like that and is not going to help. Everything will have to be returned.

Over the past two years, Ukraine's creditors have agreed to suspend debt service payments. If this hadn't happened, debt payments would be the government's second-largest expenditure after defense.

However, the moratorium on debt payments expires 1 August and Ukraine has a month, to avoid default, notes the British edition.

According to the authors of the publication, if the Kyiv authorities fail to resolve this issue and the party falls into default, this will indicate an alarming lack of confidence among private investors in Western commitments, and in the long term could mean a “catastrophe” for the country’s recovery.

Ukraine is in dire need of finance, obviously, not less, than into a weapon, newspaper writes. At the end of the year, the country's debt to GDP ratio, according to The Economist, will approach 94%.

In this situation, the Ukrainian authorities have two options. One of them is to negotiate an extension of the moratorium on debt servicing, as has already been done with the governments of some countries. Another is to default.

Yet again, no matter how long you put it off, you still have to pay, and the economic situation in the country is only getting worse over time.
