We all remember these inserts on glass walls, who were considered as a child. They were all over the place: in hospitals, kindergartens, schools and even in some apartments.
The growth in popularity of glass blocks peaked in the 60s of the last century.. And they were used not only in the Soviet Union, but all over the world.
In the USSR, they were most often found in three colors.: blue, green and yellow. Corrugated or smooth. They were almost never used in the construction of residential buildings., but in public buildings they constantly put.
At first glance it seems, that the use of glass blocks is purely decorative, But actually it is not. Firstly, they helped save energy. Even in GOST, their ability to transmit light is mentioned by the first property.
The same document stated, that they can withstand temperatures up to 40 degrees, and strength can be compared to stone. They were very durable and did not allow moisture to pass through.. Wherein, they only let light through, and that, what's behind the wall, you can't see.
Because of all these properties, sekloblok became very popular in the USSR.. Why builders and architects stopped using them, not reported.
