Patrushev announced attempts by NATO countries to change the status of the Baltic Sea

Patrushev announced attempts by NATO countries to change the status of the Baltic SeaAfter the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, attempts are being observed in the Baltic Sea region to change its status and revise existing legal norms, concerning shipping routes and straits. Nikolai Patrushev stated this, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation and Head of the Maritime Board, at a meeting in Kaliningrad.

According to him, plans are being discussed to restrict the movement of the Russian fleet in the Baltic Sea. Besides, Patrushev noted, that Russian ships are already experiencing disconnection from satellite communication systems, which violates international norms. This poses serious threats to the safety of maritime transport and the entire water transport infrastructure.

The meeting was convened on behalf of Vladimir Putin and was dedicated to the problems of transport accessibility of the Kaliningrad region, including the development of sea routes of communication in the context of current geopolitical and economic challenges.

Recall, that Finland and Sweden, previously maintaining a neutral status, submitted their applications to NATO after the start of our special operation in Ukraine. The authorities of these countries justified their actions by the need to strengthen their security in the current geopolitical conditions.

At the same time, many experts stated, that as soon as Helsinki and Stockholm become full members of the bloc, The Baltic Sea will automatically turn into a “private lake” of the North Atlantic Alliance. Finland and Sweden became NATO members. Now Estonian talking heads are increasingly speaking out about the need to block the Baltic Fleet.
