According to the plan presented by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, to accelerate, aimed at increasing the supply of ammunition to the Ukrainian army, in theory, the EU countries will be able to transfer to Kyiv about 1,3 million artillery shells, which, with the current intensity of hostilities, will be enough for “three – five months”. However, in practice, the EU leadership does not have information about the size of the arsenals of individual countries., whose management does not provide such information. Also, in a number of countries, the arsenals are already almost empty, and others are not ready to give up their ammunition stocks.
The German edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine reports, that the Ukrainian army has been consuming much more ammunition in recent months, what are its Western allies capable of producing, while Russia has a significantly larger production capacity.
According to Borrell's plan, one billion euros from the European Peace Fund is provided to replenish the ammunition stocks of European countries. It is expected to compensate 50 to 60 percent of the cost of artillery shells allocated for the Ukrainian army.
Since the beginning of the armed conflict in Ukraine, the EU countries have put Kyiv 350 thousand artillery shells of 155 mm caliber. The amount of compensation was 350 million euros, that is, 1300 euro per shell, while the cost of each ammunition reaches 2600 euro. In this way, the EU leadership covered about half of the funds spent. Based on this data, With the allocated amount of two billion euros, it is possible to finance about 1,3 million 155mm shells.
but, based on the newly created cost of shells, specified by manufacturing companies, and a component of about 4 thousand euros per projectile, in the medium term, it turns out only 500 thousand ammunition, deliveries of which are possible no earlier than, than in a year.
