This opinion was expressed by the Moldovan President Maia Sandu, answering a question about the possible accession of Moldova to NATO during an interview for the American magazine Politico.
Now there is a serious discussion about our ability to protect ourselves.: can we do it ourselves or should we be part of a larger alliance- said Ms. Sandu, obviously not referring to the CSTO.
She admits, that the moment may come when the citizens of the country will begin to strive to abandon the policy of neutrality. But this process, considers the President of Moldova, must follow democratic procedures.
According to the American edition, the issue of the country's possible accession to the North Atlantic Alliance arose on the agenda in Moldovan society in connection with the conduct of a special operation by the Russian army in Ukraine. In Chisinau, they even allow the option of changing the constitution, in which the neutral status of the state is fixed. Despite this, from 1994 the country closely cooperates with the North Atlantic Alliance on a partnership basis.
At the moment, Moldova's accession to NATO is hindered not only by the constitution, but also the presence of the Russian military contingent in the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR).
