Russia's attempts to annex any regions of Ukraine, including the Donbass, doomed to fail, The United States does not recognize the results “possible referenda” and will give a tough response in the form of regular sanctions. This was stated by a senior official of the White House.
As the official stated, American intelligence “sees” Russia's intentions to hold a referendum in the Donbass, in Kherson and Zaporozhye. However, Washington is confident, that the voting results will be rigged, Moscow “falsely declare”, that the citizens of Ukraine want to join Russia, although in reality they want to continue to live as part of Ukraine.
Any statements about, what they want to join, it is not true (…) Fair referendums would show the rejection of the idea of joining. Any referenda arranged by the Russian Federation will not be fair and honest- White House spokesman said.
The United States will never recognize the annexation of Donbass or other regions of Ukraine to Russia, US response “will be tough”.

According to a US administration official, the annexation of any territories will only complicate the diplomatic settlement between Russia and Ukraine, negotiations are necessary to end the conflict.
