Armed forces of Ukraine in 2022 year will begin to receive a new version of the main battle tank T-64. According to the press service of the Kharkov Armored Plant (HBTZ), the enterprise is ready to modernize the existing tank fleet to the T-64BM2 version “Crab”.
As stated by KhBTZ director German Smetanin, “new” T-64BM2 is a version 2022 of the year, last year the company mastered the overhaul of T-64 tanks to this level and is ready to begin fulfilling the contract this year.
About the start of work on the new T tank- 64BM2 “Crab” The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported back in 2020 year. In April 2021 the military ordered the first batch “new” tanks, work on them was carried out by the plant. Malyshev (ZiM) and Kharkov Armored Plant (HBTZ). As stated, this version is the most powerful version of the T-64 and most importantly, developed without Russian components.
According to available information, As part of the modernization, the tank received a 6TD engine with a power 1000 hp, new fire control and aiming system, as well as enhanced firepower using guided missiles “Kombat”. A new secure digital communication and navigation system has been installed, including two radio stations, commander's night sights, gunner and driver's instruments, the tank received protective lattice screens, covering the stern.
Actually, all the best, what was installed on the T-64BM and T-84 - integrated into this tank- clarified by the Ukrainian military department.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has already stated, that the modernized T-64BM2 tank “Crab” will become the main tank of the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the coming 25 years.
