The expedition of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences found a container with a nuclear reactor of the K-19 submarine at the bottom of the Kara Sea. This was announced by the head of the central airmobile detachment “Centrospas” Evgeny Lineitsev on his Facebook page.
Expedition, which includes specialists from the Ministry of Emergency Situations “Centrospas” and “Leader”, as well as scientists from the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, survey the water area of the Arctic Ocean in order to detect burials of radioactive waste. In the Ambrosiev Gulf at the bottom of the Kara Sea, a remotely controlled robot “Falcon” discovered a container with a nuclear reactor submarine K-19. Work is carried out from the side of the ship “Academician Mstislav Keldysh”.
In the future, the find will be examined and all the necessary analyzes will be carried out.. The object will be entered into a special register, which creates the Ministry of Emergency Situations on behalf of the government. It marks the burial sites of radioactive waste, chemical agents and ammunition. At the moment, more than 24 thousand titles.
As noted, The Kara Sea is a dumping ground for numerous waste, remaining after nuclear weapons tests. Parts of the icebreaker's nuclear reactor are flooded in four sea bays “Lenin”, nuclear submarine K-27 and many other objects, the number of which has long exceeded one thousand.
