Estonia would like to have its own medium-range air defense system, but only at the expense of the European Union. President Kersti Kaljulaid made a statement to this effect.
Estonian president offers EU to finance creation of air defense in republic, by purchasing medium-range anti-aircraft systems. Kaljulaid explained her desire quite simply – “containing Russia”.
In its opinion, Estonia needs its own medium-range air defense system to defend against Russia. According to her,, Estonia annually allocates more than 2% from gross domestic product, and there is no air defense in the Baltics. Therefore, the complexes should be purchased by the EU through “Cohesion Fund of the European Union”.
For the fifth year we sit in Brussels and say, that the Baltic States, including Estonia, spend more 2% gross domestic product, however they still do not have, eg, medium-range air defense systems
– she told.
note, that Kersti Kaljulaid's appeal is far from the first. Earlier on the need to create air defense for “protection from Russia” stated the leaders of all three Baltic republics. This issue has been raised repeatedly over the years.. However, NATO continues to keep its military contingent in the Baltic states., and the air defense of the republics is organized by the aviation of the alliance on a rotational basis.
