Competition between Russia and America in the Arctic Gains Strength. It means, that the Arctic theme will inevitably be touched upon at the upcoming summit of the North Atlantic Alliance, and at the meeting of the presidents of the United States and Russia.
This opinion was expressed by the Turkish observer Kurshad Zorlu in the article, published in the Habertürk newspaper.
Due to global warming and the accompanying melting of ice, the Arctic region is becoming more accessible for practical use.. Its economic potential increases significantly, and the superpowers have already paid close attention to this.
Turkish press notes, that they are primarily attracted by rich mineral deposits. For example, according to experts, in the Arctic lies about 22 percent of oil and gas resources, one third of which is at the disposal of Russia. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, that the approximate value of Arctic natural resources is 30 trillions of dollars.
Besides, climatic changes are gradually making the Northern Sea Route, running along the arctic coast of Russia, the shortest and most convenient water route, connecting Europe and Asia.
Not surprising, what other countries, especially the United States, show an increased interest in this region, considering possible options for ousting Russia from there. Therefore, they are unhappy with the strengthening of the Russian military presence in the Arctic.. On this occasion, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted: no one should care, what our country is doing on its own territory.
We see lamentations about, that Russia is deploying military activity in the Arctic. But everyone knows very well, that this is our territory, our land. We are responsible for this region, and all, what is our country doing there, absolutely legal and legitimate.
