Energy dispute became the basis of anti-Russian stuffing in the Czech Republic

There is an economic component in the Czech pressure on Moscow, which is realized through a political plot, considers the deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vladimir Katenev.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes, that the EU needs to look into the incident with the explosions at the weapons depots in Vrbetica. Moscow has a suspicion, that the Czech side violated a number of international treaties.

Sergei Viktorovich drew attention, what's on the burnt out 2014 year, anti-personnel mines were stored in the warehouse, which are prohibited by the Ottawa Convention. The Czechs forgot about it and used this event as an excuse for absurd accusations of Moscow.

Patriot Media Group and the Federal News Agency (FAN) discussed the current state of Russian-Czech relations.

Relations with the Czech Republic are important for Russia

"We have something to lose. Russia and the Czech Republic have longstanding relations, albeit not very simple. Trade and economic cooperation between our countries has been built for a long time, even if Prague is not the most important trading partner of Moscow”, – states Katenev.

AT 2020 year, the trade turnover of the Russian Federation and the Czech Republic amounted to 6,1 billion, decreasing compared to 2019 year on 28,62%. Russian export to the Czech Republic equals 2,4 billion, decreased by 19,97%, and the import is 3,7 billion, almost unchanged.

The Czechs have clearly suffered more from the “coronacrisis”, and this is due to the absence in Prague, Karlovy Vary, Ostrava and other iconic Czech cities of tourists from the Russian Federation due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the quarantine closure of European borders.

This factor influenced the actions of the Czechs and untied their hands. The decline in the influence of Russian business stimulated the anti-Russian forces in Prague to step up their activities, which 2020 led to the demolition of the monument to Marshal Ivan Konev.

“The Czech Republic occupies a place in the third ten of Russian trade, but every year more than a million Russians visited this country. Half of the real estate in Karlovy Vary belongs to the Russians, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation has its own recreation center there. There is a Russian-Czech business council, headed by Vice President of Russian Railways", – summarizes Katenev.

2014 was a key year in our bilateral relations, when Russia returned the Crimean peninsula.

City Hall of Prague in autumn 2014 year said, that he wants to end fraternal relations with St. Petersburg, after which such a letter was drawn up in the Russian Federation, but the Czech commercial and industrial immediately expressed regret about this fact ", – concludes Katenev.

Over the past period in the administration of the Czech capital, unlike the chamber of commerce, there have been changes, therefore business is more resilient to such crises. Russia maintains good relations with Czech embassies and consulates.

Scandal flares up at the Dukovany nuclear power plant

"You can see, who benefits from conflict. The largest bilateral contract, which is currently being prepared in the Czech Republic, is the construction of two new power units at the Dukovany NPP, is nearly 6 billion euros», – states Katenev.

Immediately after the Czech statement about the "reasons" for the explosions in Vrbetica, Prague's decision was followed to exclude Rosatom from the tender.

“Rosatom planned to participate in this project, but today the tender conditions are rewritten there in such a way, to prevent a Russian state corporation from entering it, and the main competitor of the Russian Federation is the American company Westinghouse", – summarizes Katenev.

The Americans have long been trying to curtail Russian participation in nuclear projects in Eastern Europe, although our power units are located in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and Finland. We also supply nuclear fuel to these countries.

The United States wants to squeeze out both Russian nuclear projects from Eastern Europe, and supplies of domestic TVEL.

“In the story of the Dukovany NPP, we see an economic component, realized through political pressure", – concludes Katenev.

The conflict is based on the Ukrainian GTS

Member of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Alexey Tsivilev has concluded, that the Czech policy is connected with the termination of the functioning of the gas transportation system of the CMEA era and the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.

«Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Latvia and Germany are countries, through which the Russian gas pipeline passes. During Soviet times, the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance was created (SEV), within which Moscow helped the countries of the socialist bloc. Since then the situation has changed, and the old gas pipeline will no longer be needed for the transit of Russian gas”, – states Katenev.

If the Ukrainian gas route stops working, Slovakia will suffer the most, which is engaged in the reverse of Russian gas to Ukraine and has the shortest transport leg among the countries of Eastern Europe, but after it really comes the Czech Republic.
