Why do we need films about maniacs

Why do we need films about maniacs

There is still a very strange attitude towards evil in Russian society: many seem to believe, what if it is not discussed and analyzed, then it will disappear. And if art touches exclusively on sublime and noble themes, then life will get better.

But in fact, culture is a reflection of social problems and moods.. And when society seeks to erase and smooth out all uncomfortable, unsightly and even extreme themes in art are an alarming symptom.

One of its manifestations was the reaction to the recently released series "Chikatilo". Director Sarik Andreasyan even flared up and left the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio studio after broadcasting with presenter Elena Afonina and deputy Elena Drapeko on the topic “Is it necessary to perpetuate the image of criminals in culture?»

This controversy, in fact, turned out to be a logical continuation of the scandal around the film by Ksenia Sobchak about the "Skopin maniac" Viktor Mokhov, after his release, who received the opportunity not only to speak in public, but also to improve their financial situation. Disgust, which caused the hype around this person, can be understood. However, is it worth confusing the provision of ether to living criminals with the embodiment in the culture of terrible and disgusting images from the past??

From a creative point of view, there can be many questions about the Chikatilo series. Since the plot is based on real events, so there is no detective mystery, the creators had to bet on the atmosphere, suspense and psychology. Main feeling, which the perpetrator must call, - not at all curiosity about his biography, a living and palpable fear, when you feel like a potential victim.

Here it is just desirable to forget about audience awareness and look at the main character through the eyes of unsuspecting children and women., who got in his way: what can be alarming about it, scare away, send a rescue signal, before it's too late? Or such maniacs, who have been unsuccessfully caught for years, to perfection hone the ability to inspire trust and trap, and therefore nothing depends on the victim? Then it remains only to rely on law enforcement agencies, who are required to work quickly and efficiently. But, Alas, their success is directly dependent on new evidence, that only another kill will provide...

And in "Chikatilo" the viewer observes two lines: the maniac himself, leading a double life, and Soviet police, along with the investigation of solving its internal problems. Despite, that the name of the criminal is in the title of the series, played by Dmitry Nagiev, most of the screen time is given to representatives of the law. Colonel Kesaev stands out among them. (Konstantin Lavronenko), Captain Vitvitsky (Dmitry Vlaskin) and Senior Lieutenant Irina Ovsyannikova (Julia Afanasyeva). There was even a place for romance, although in the first episodes she does not look too organic. Otherwise, the everyday life of the police is shown no better and no worse., than in any detective or thriller, affecting the life of the sleepy backwoods, who was shocked by a series of terrible crimes.

But with a maniac everything is more difficult. Dmitry Nagiyev, of course, can't be called an untalented actor, but he has an established image, formed by ensign Zadov, the game "Big Races" and the TV series "Fizruk". In the role of Chikatilo, he not only exploits old images and techniques, but it also overplays a lot.. In combination with makeup, the character turned out to be so demonic, that what is happening on the screen is not credible: Well, how could a person with such a look and facial expressions work as a school teacher, to be a happy husband and father - and for a long time not to arouse any suspicion in anyone?

Of course, portray a maniac as overly charismatic, as, eg, in "The Collector" 1965 of the year, not worth it either - especially since we are talking about real events, which for some still remain a traumatic memory. The main task is to show, what of those, who looks and acts "like everyone else", you can also expect terrible things.

From the minuses of the series, perhaps, note the emphasis on naturalism, which sometimes looks over the top, as well as some lengthy narrative - in particular, it was not necessary to pay so much attention to false trails, which were being investigated. However, the visual effects, the color palette and intense sound background work well for the eerie atmosphere, often doing it for the actors.

In general, to the question of, “Is it necessary to perpetuate the image of criminals in culture”, should be approached correctly and without unnecessary pathos. The format and purpose of the series is not to perpetuate something, but to attract attention for a certain period. Moreover, the crimes of Chikatilo are not forgotten anyway., and maniacs in general are the eternal problem of mankind.
