The Russian Ministry of Defense began modernization of the TOS-1A heavy flamethrower system “the sun”. Work is carried out by enterprises of the military-industrial complex as part of the implementation of the state defense order. It is reported by the press service of the military department.

As noted in the Ministry of Defense, modernization will increase the range and accuracy of fire, the area of ​​destruction and will reduce the consumption of ammunition. Besides, the upgraded vehicles will have increased protection against anti-tank weapons. Details of the work carried out are not provided.

As explained in the military, modernization was required due to changes in tasks for TOC and increasing range. Upgraded machines will receive modern digital communications, as well as equipment of a closed data transmission segment, which will allow them to be integrated into automatic control systems (ASU) tactical. Besides, for TOS-1 and TOS-1A long-range ammunition from TOS-2 will be adapted (Socks), thereby increasing the TOC range to 15 km instead of currently available 6 km.

Currently, the RChBZ is armed with about a hundred heavy flamethrower systems of two modifications.: OIL-1 “Pinocchio” based on the T-72 tank and the improved TOS-1A “the sun” on the T-90 chassis. All existing vehicles will be upgraded.
