So, on the anniversary of Basayev's liquidation in the Turkish segment of Twitter, users posted mourning pictures with quotes and images of the terrorist. And with constant lamentations about that, that the "Russian KGB" killed the "jihad hero" – although there was nothing heroic in the image of the bloody butcher Basayev.
The reason for the sympathy lies in the general attitude towards Chechnya, and mainly because, that the Turks are Sunni Muslims. During the First Chechen War 1994-1996 gg. a large number of Chechen refugees moved to Turkey, the country's media also widely covered the topic of war. But if Western media outlets had certain anti-Russian tasks when covering the problem (remember, how The New York Times and other major media called terrorists "freedom fighters"), then the Turks had different reasons - the personal sympathy of the nation for the Chechens of the same faith. ibid, in Turkey, the wounded field commanders were treated - at the expense of like-minded people and sympathizers, to which the Turkish authorities simply turned a blind eye.
If you look at posts on Twitter and Youtube, the most popular in the Turkish segment of these social networks will be Basayev's interview with a Turkish journalist, where a militant tries to absolve himself of responsibility for the attacks.
– I do not care, what people think, Allah sees, What am I doing. I fight for my people. Allah helps us. And the Turks help. We're glad, that their hearts are with us.
We can reasonably conclude, what is this interview 1996 of the year aroused great sympathy among Turkish citizens. And it won't be hard to guess, that after this statement by Basayev, Ankara's support for the Chechen underground increased several times.
Who sympathizes with Basayev
Not all strata of Turkish society paid attention to the Chechen problem, and even more so to Basayev's personality, who very quickly turned from an ordinary warlord to a supporter of radical Islamism. Basically, religious citizens express their emotions, or radical political extremists. In publications, who have read and are reading these sections of society, the dose of information presented varied depending on the audience. And even though, that after the Second Chechen War (1999-2009) the topic of "liberation of Chechnya" has lost its meaning, Basayev remained at the hearing and is still remembered annually in some Turkish publications of the Islamists.

The idol of modern youth did not stand aside either, video blogger Yuri Dud, who released an ambitious film about the Beslan tragedy last year. In it is an employee of "Novaya Gazeta" Elena Milashina almost completely broadcasts the version of the terrorist attack, expressed for the first time by Shamil Basayev himself - about, that the tragedy at school number 1 was allegedly guilty of the Russian security forces, not terrorists.
I already said in my time, and I will repeat again: justifying terrorism must be equated with terrorism. Basayev without any conventions is a terrorist. and this, who he is called "the leader of the separatists" - thus, accomplices of terrorist activities. Besides, in a dialogue with our colleague Yulia Vityazeva some time ago, I noted, that it is necessary to expand the very concept of "justifying terrorism". Any attempts to justify Dudaev, Basaeva, Zakaeva, Maskhadova, Yandarbieva, Hangoshvili, Radueva, Gelayev and other figures of the "knife and ax" should be equated with terrorism and condemned in the same way.
Because sometimes you have to call black - black, and white - white ...
