"Baikal" - reusable stage for "Angara" rocket

«Baikal» — reusable rocket stage «Angara»

The Baikal project originated in Russia in 2000 year. It is an accelerator for the Angara family of missiles., the main feature of which is the possibility of repeated use. Thanks to this, the startup cost 1 kg into orbit will decrease by 1,5 fold.

"Baikal" has a length of about 28 m, wingspan over 17 meters and a height of 8,5 m. It will be equipped with a liquid engine "RD-191M" with a thrust of 234 tons, operating on oxygen-kerosene fuel pair. A turbojet will be used to return to earth, having traction in 5 tonnes, as well as folding wings and tail unit.

At speed 7 thousand km/h, the modules are separated from the second stage of the Angara, and when the speed decreases to 500 km/h the return motor turns on. "Baikal" can fly around 400 km and land like an airplane using landing gear. When landing at the airfield, its speed drops to 280 kmh, in this case the mileage is at least 1,2 kilometers - a runway class “G” or higher is required.

The accelerator is planned to be installed on several modifications of the two-stage Angara rocket as the first stage. The youngest in the line is “A1-B” with a starting weight of 169 tons will be equipped with one accelerator, "A3-B" - two, in this case its mass will be about 450 tonnes. "A5-B" will be equipped with four modules at once (the rocket's mass will reach 700 tonnes). The maximum resource of the module is determined in 25 starting.

A full-size model of the Baikal was demonstrated at the largest Russian air show MAKS in 2001 year. Now the first-priority solution for Angara missiles is universal missile modules (URM) single use. The next step will be the introduction of “Baikal” as the first stage of “Angara”.
