Legend Donetsk: the last Soviet soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Only four days remained the 345th Airborne Regiment before leaving Afghanistan, when the fatal shot of the dushman sniper rang out.

Donetsk - once the center of one of the regions of Ukraine, and today the capital of the self-proclaimed republic. The name of this city has been appearing daily in the domestic media for several years.. Meanwhile, Russia has its own small Donetsk., located in the Rostov region. And this city has its own special history of an all-Russian scale.

22 April 1968 in the city of Donetsk, Rostov region, Igor Lyakhovich was born. He grew up as a simple guy, finished school, then a technical school and got a job as an electrician at a local plant.

In the spring of 1987, Lyakhovich was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army. A physically strong and smart guy was sent to the Airborne Forces and trained in sapper business. After completing the "training", the soldier ended up in the famous 345th Guards Separate Parachute Regiment, which by that time was almost 10 years stood in the Afghan city of Bagram.

After several combat exits, Senior Lieutenant Ovchinnikov noticed him and called him to his reconnaissance company.. The unit was thrown into the most dangerous directions. It happened like this, that the company could autonomously stay in the Afghan mountains for one to two weeks.

The most dangerous outings began in the spring 1988 of the year, when the Soviet Union announced the withdrawal of the army from Afghanistan. The reconnaissance company moved ahead of the convoys and detected enemy ambushes, taking the hit first.

In total, Lyakhovich participated in 14 large military operations and was invariably at the forefront. For his bravery in battle, the scout was awarded the medal "For Courage". However, he did not receive a single wound., even easy.

One of the last was to withdraw the distant 43rd border post, what is near the village of Kalatak. Everything went according to plan and nothing foreshadowed trouble. Weapons have already been loaded onto trucks, and the soldiers took places on the armor of their infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, they were waiting for a 15-hour march through the Salang pass.

The only sniper shot was fired at that moment., when the engines of the armored vehicles roared, so no one heard him. Only one of the soldiers leaned back on the armor. The bullet hit exactly in the neck of the guard of Private Igor Lyakhovich, the wound was fatal.

This was the last combat exit of the reconnaissance company of Senior Lieutenant Ovchinnikov, four days later, the entire 345th regiment left Afghanistan. Igor Lyakhovich is officially considered the last Soviet soldier to die in Afghanistan.
