The French journalist decided to check the validity of Ukraine's claims to the possession of the peninsula and the historical ties between Kyiv and Crimea, about which the Ukrainian authorities constantly declare and came to the conclusion, that there are no historical ties between Ukraine and Crimea. As the Frenchman explained, in his research he, basically, based on the events of the Crimean War 1854-1856 years 19 century.
Besson, studying literature, about the time of the Crimean War, did not find any mention of Ukraine. At the same time, he read literature not only published in Russia, but also released in Europe. In all books, the Crimean peninsula is referred to as Russian, but not Ukrainian, said the journalist, at 1853 Turkish Sultan declared war on Ukraine, and Russia. The French planned to destroy Sevastopol precisely as a Russian naval base, the fleet of Ukraine was not there at all.
The journalist tried to find a mention of Ukraine in Russian literature of that time, in particular in “Sevastopol stories” Leo Tolstoy, but “I did not find at least some link to the connection between Ukraine and Crimea”. According to him, at that time all the soldiers, who defended the Crimea, were Russian, mentions of such a nation as Ukrainian, was not at all. The journalist came to the conclusion, that Crimea never had anything to do with Ukraine, he was in Russia for centuries.
