The desire to Kiev to obtain membership in the EU and NATO is now enshrined in the Law on National Security of Ukraine. President Poroshenko said after signing the law, that "the Ukrainian people clearly defined his future".
"This is our return to the European family of nations, in the European political, economic, secure, legal space, until the acquisition of membership in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ", – the President said at the signing of the Act.
He also said, now finalized the constitutional changes to achieve the goal, fixed in this Act: "We will make a relevant draft amendments to the Constitution in the Ukrainian parliament".
Ukraine's course towards Euro-Atlantic integration is already established in the law "On the principles of domestic and foreign policy", which was adopted in the summer 2017 of the year. Accession to the EU and the "Euro-Atlantic security space" in the law called the priority of foreign policy.
Despite the fact that the representatives of the North Atlantic Alliance has repeatedly welcomed the desire of Kiev to join the military-political bloc, it was emphasized, that while Ukraine is not ready for membership.
"I have great respect for Ukraine, but I do not see yet the possibility, Ukraine is ready to join NATO, and NATO is ready to accept Ukraine into the situation, in which it is " - said the US special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker. he explained, prior to entry into the alliance Kiev need to carry out reforms in the sphere of defense and security, as well as "to mend relations with its neighbors".
