"Black Eagle" ("Object 640") - Russian project promising main battle tank, developed in the 1990s by the Omsk Transport Machine-Building Design Bureau.

The prototype was first demonstrated in 1997 and represented by a modified running gear of the T-80U with the installed tower new design. Design

Tower welded fundamentally new type. It formed as two symmetrically spaced armor compartments, rigidly fixed to the common base. The project involved the armament 125 mm gun, coaxial 7.62-mm anti-aircraft gun and a remote unit with a 12.7-mm machine gun "Cord".
When a combat weight 48 tonnes, tank to be fitted with a new gas turbine engine capacity of more than 1500 HP. In this way, specific tank capacity exceeded 30 hp / t and, as a consequence,, the dynamic characteristics of "Object 640" were significantly superior characteristics of the western third generation tanks, having a specific power 20 — 25 hp / ton.

According to representatives of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, mass production of promising tank "Object 640" is not provided. Nevertheless, solutions, spent on a given sample, will serve as a major stepping stone for modernization of existing tanks. For many years in the media repeatedly, there were reports on the progress of development and testing of the tank "Black Eagle", but no details on the date and plans to launch mass production has not been reported. but 12 September 2009 , the acting head of the military-scientific committee of armored automotive vehicles of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, Colonel Vladimir said Voitov, that the tank "Black Eagle", armored vehicle called the fourth or even the fifth generation, and also known as the "Object 640", does not exist.
28 April 2011 , former First Deputy Main Armored Directorate Russian Ministry of Defense, Major-General Yuri Kovalenko told, that the "Black Eagle" practices will be used in the new main battle tank "Armata".
