The site of one of the Russian private military companies (PMC) published an interesting article about, how ships of the navies of different countries “guard” merchant ships in the pirate regions - the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Oman, Yemen, Somalia, Djibouti, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique and the Indian Ocean.

Here is what a member of the "anti-piracy team" PMC says:

-Most convoys escorted by warships are stretched over 20 and more nautical miles, and the ships in them move at different speeds. One or two security ships cannot physically keep track of everyone. Our sailors act most decently: usually, an armed detachment of marines is landed on the ship, which fully guarantee the safety from pirates. Americans never do this., other fleets do extremely rarely.

Imagine this column of length 20 miles, drawn into the danger zone. At this time, "peaceful fishermen" have already seen prey - the slowest object of the convoy. As soon as the warship moves to a safe distance, they seize the ship with lightning speed. Why lightning fast? Because there is an illusion of security - convoy. Consequently, the captain from economy does not hire security, no protection systems, crew rescue room is not equipped. And the pirates are here. And while there the military will understand, what happened, until they return… The ship will already be in one of the pirate caches. More often, but, the convoy ship WILL NOT even return - according to the order, he should not abandon other ships for the sake of one.

However, security on the ship is also not always helpful. To this market (anti-piracy security services - adm.) many rushed. I will not give names, not to be accused of unfair competition, but I know a team from Greece, which was organized by a former athlete, never served in the army. There are security companies, who supply teams with "left weapons". The first inspection by any warship - and such "guards" themselves will be recognized as pirates. One Russian PMC Armed Marine Guards… three-rulers. But the leaders in idiocy are the British. These "white gentlemen" prefer to hire local residents as security guards, who are often either "tip" pirates, or pirates.

PMC, value their reputation, never allow such "blunders". Weapons are purchased new and legally registered. Employees receive special training, we train regularly. I can say, that, unlike the advertised American PMC "Blackwater", which only the deaf have not heard of and which has recently left the anti-piracy services market, our team did not “surrender” a single ship to the pirates. Most often, it does not even reach the use of weapons.: seeing professional fighters on board, the pirates go away.
